Lake Delton--The Lake That Used To Be

Bruce needed to get some CEUs to keep his pump installer's license this month, so we headed to the Kalahari Resort in Lake Delton. That's the resort town in southern Wisconsin that literally lost their lake during the spring floods. The shoreline gave way and the dam was breached. The Wisconsin River got a whole lot more water than it really needed. While Bruce was in class, I played tourist and took these pictures of the puddle that was once a lake. I drove down the rode alongside the lake looking at all the resorts and businesses along the way. What used to be lakeside properties are now high and dry. I stopped at a little gift shop attached to a horse and wagon trail ride business and talked to the shopkeeper. She said they were able to adjust and still have a pretty good summer. They are looking forward to next year when the lake should be filled again and back in use. What humans created, humans will fix.

The Kalahari Resort is not on Lake Delton. It is on the edge of town and it is huge. If you didn't want to leave that complex your whole vacation you wouldn't need to. It has hotel rooms, condos, places to eat, swim (indoor and out), workout, do business and an indoor water park will be opening in December. The check in looks like an airport concourse, with clothing shops, gift shops, coffee and snack shops, you name it. It has an African theme throughout, right down to the plush-suited upright-walking elephant that greets the guests. You can check it out for yourself, if you want http://kalahariresort.com/wi/.

Here are some other sites in the Lake Delton/Wisconsin Dells area.

The "ducks" are refurbished land/water vehicles that were used in World War II. Today they are used to take visitors on road and water tours of the Dells.

Good thing Tommy Bartlett doesn't have to depend on income from the ski shows only, since there is no lake to perform on.

How would you like this on your front lawn?

And then there's the Colesseum and the Parthenon...

Was there and earthquake? I didn't feel and earthquake! Did you feel and earthquake? I have no idea what this is, but this might have been where I ran the red light!
